The Types of Homes
There are a number of different kinds of homes that you can buy in France. You can purchase a home on the outskirts of one of the big cities or out in the country, or you can purchase an apartment in one of the larger, busier cities. If you purchase an apartment you need to be aware that apartments are generally sold without any furniture and with an unfurnished kitchen. Unless you have a unique situation, you will be required to purchase your appliances and, possibly, your cabinets and countertops. Older buildings have much different layouts than people in other countries are used to, so try to remember to have an open mind when you view either an old apartment or an older home.
Using an Agent
Home and apartment listings are much different in France than they are in the countries of North America. For instance there are no Multiple Listings in France. Only a small percentage of the population sell their homes through realtors, the rest do it through private sales. How, then, are you going to be able to find a home that you want to purchase? The best way is generally to use an agent. An agent can not only help you to bridge the language barrier, they can help you to navigate through the tricky world that is France’s real estate. An agent who is familiar with the laws of the beautiful country can more easily help to lead you through the laws as well as to help you find the home of your dreams.
City or Country?
The choice of whether to live in the city or in the country is one that you need to make pretty quickly in your search. It can help to understand that apartments in the larger cities, like apartment in Paris, are fairly small. A studio apartment is usually under two hundred square feet. The typical apartment will have a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The bedroom will likely be the smallest room in the apartment while the living room will be the largest. If you’re looking for something larger, you may want to view the homes that are available for purchase in the country. They may be a bit more run down, especially if they are homes that have been for sale for awhile, but they will have more room and will have the advantage of having a lawn.
Finalizing Things
Once you have found your home it is time to finalize the deal. A lawyer will help you to get the proper paperwork. In France, the buyer and the seller will both sign a promesse de vente. This document basically says that the seller is promising to sell the property to the buyer. At this point the seller can not back out of the deal, but the buyer has eleven days to change their mind.
Choosing Your Home
Paris is one of the most popular cities for people to want to own a home in, possibly because of the romantic image of the city that everyone has. It is a very wonderful city, but there is so much more to France than just Paris. Take, for instance, Bordeaux. Known as the city of wine, this beautiful city in the south west of the country is thought of as much for it’s beautiful vistas as it is for it’s wine. Owning a home in Nice is a good idea for anyone who wants to find relaxation or who wants to own an investment, as this city on the French Riviera is constantly frequented by vacationers. Cannes is also a well-known and popular city in France. Known for the Cannes Film Festival, this beautiful city is busy all through the year, before, during, and after the Cannes Film Festival occurs.
If you want to own a home in France, the first thing you should do is to contact an agent. They will help you to walk through the process of finding your home, finding a lawyer, and finalizing the deal.
