Torrevieja is situated on the eastern coast of Spain on the Med, south of Alicante in the community of Valencia. It is surrounded by two large Salt lakes which promote it as having the healthiest climate in the area..
It is serviced by the International airports of Alicante, El Altet and at Murcia, San Javier. All the major budget and other airlines fly into either of these airports. Torrevieja is equidistant from either of them.
In recent years, the traditional Spanish fishing and market town has developed into a 1st class Tourist resort for the independent traveller. There are no package tours .
Weather wise it boasts 360 days of sunshine a year and low rainfall with average temperatures of 18oC.
Torrevieja is also well known for for its outstanding port, the remains of which can still be seen in La Mata, called the embarcadero romano, or Roman docks. Along the coast are the ancient watchtowers called El Moro and La Mata, used in the Middle Ages to warn the coastal inhabitants of attacks by Barbary pirates.
There are many beautiful beaches, squares, walks, parks, gardens and other natural beauty spots (Ferriz), aswell as some wonderful historical monuments such as the "Modernist Casino" which dates from the begining of the century and has a famous hall in the mozarabic style; the "Recinto de las Eras de la Sal" an open, air theatre.
One of the main attractions in Torrevieja are the variety of festivals which take place every month. Some of the most popular events in Spain are the Carnavals in which thousands of people join in, forming a light show of colour, satir and good humour. The Holy Week attracts lots of people into the streets, converting these into huge paths of colour penance and popular religiosity. Good Friday at night is one of the most venerated and admired festivals on the spanish eastern coast.
Shopping in Torrevieja is some of the best Spain has to offer. The coastal town streets are lined with shops selling everything from handbags to lace, and perfume to sun cream. Most items are competitively priced and a good buy in the area is locally produced wicker wear. For fun shopping, visit a lively market every Friday – stalls are filled with fresh fruit and fish, hand-painted ceramics and colourful rugs. For chain-stores and more sophisticated designer wear, visit Habeneras Shopping Centre or browse along the Night Market on the esplanade and try the turron (nut nougat) a local delicacy.
Torrevieja is one of the Spain’s hottest nightspots with its countless bars, discos, clubs and pubs which draw partygoers from all along the coast.
Or for a quieter time: Try a traditional paella to the sound of Spanish guitar, or enjoy local tapas and watch a flamenco display. Or simpy stroll along the harbour and soak up a warm summer evening under the stars…
