Villa La Pieve is a characteristic stone country house set in its own grounds and enjoying stunning views of wooded hills rolling gently towards Siena. An avenue of cypress trees leads from the village of Pievescola towards Villa La Pieve, a traditional private country house now cleverly divided into three delightful apartments making it perfect for larger parties whilst retaining privacy. The villa which is on two floors, is furnished in classic Tuscan style and there are a total of six bedrooms and four bathrooms rooms. Each apartment has its own living/dining room with kitchen area, and a terrace. Drapes in the bedrooms, comfortable sofas, carefully restored antique pieces and many of the attentive owners personal touches make each apartment homely and inviting.
Enclosed in its own grounds, this beautiful villa has a lovely private swimming pool (10m x 5m) furnished with sunloungers and umbrellas. Set slightly above the house the pool is shaded by olive trees and has a lovely view of the vineyard and fruit orchard to the hills beyond. There is plenty of space for relaxing and dining al fresco in the villas' garden where there is also a barbecue for guests use.
A great bonus of Villa La Pieve is that it is only 250m walk from the tiny village of Pievescola, the hamlet, a famous suburb in the middle ages for the rich nobility of Siena can be easily explored on foot, and now has a well stocked grocers shop, two local bars, newsagents, post office and a restaurant serving excellent local dishes as well as a wine cellar where you can taste the regions famous Chianti. A larger selection of shops, restaurants and a supermarket can be found at Colle di Val d’Elsa 15km away, and there are another two local trattorias just 3km down the road.
The wooded hills hide many other treasures, most famously wild mushrooms, among which the noted ‘porcini’ which grow abundantly in the area. Indeed, Pievescola has a ‘Mushroom Festival’ normally held at the beginning of September in the height of the mushroom season, when you can taste these local delicacies, which the Tuscans can cleverly incorporate mouth wateringly into a wide range of dishes.
When you can tear yourself away from the peace and tranquility of this Tuscan retreat, there is plenty to see in the area. The famous towns of San Gimignano and Siena are both only half an hours’ drive, and Florence is easily accessible by road, or by bus from nearby Colle di Val d’Elsa 15km away, famous in itself for its medieval quarter and crystal production. Lesser known but equally interesting San Galgano with its sword in the stone and roofless monastery is well worth a visit, as is Massa Marittima, a beautiful town close to the coast ,which holds its famous ‘Balestro del Girafalco’ a medieval archery festival with flag throwing and costumed strong bow contest in May and August.
