The house is in the southern Baja desert, very close (about 1/10 of a mile) to a white sand beach on the Sea of Cortez, about halfway between Cabo and La Paz, near a small Mexican village called Las Tinas.
The area is tranquil, remote and beautiful. The house is about 3 miles up a dirt road, between the village of El Cardonál and a luxury hotel called Hotel Punta Pescadero. This is old Baja, still untouched by large-scale tourism. The area is changing (Americans building beach houses), but you are still on a dirt road, 30 minutes from the nearest town of any size, and cars on the road are still outnumbered by cows, goats and chickens.
This is not Cabo. There are no golf courses. No glitz. No nightclubs. The nearest medical clinic or town of any size is 30 minutes away. The villages nearby are very small. The people are gracious and kind, the area is very safe, but it is rural and remote. There is a gorgeous beach but most of the time you will be the only people on it. You will probably enjoy this house and this stretch of Baja most if you have a sense of adventure and a willingness to be flexible
The house is a combination of luxury and roughing it, sort of like an eco-lodge.
Bathroom is complete with shower and washing machine.
There is an outdoor shower for rinsing off from the beach.
The kitchen and dining area is open air
The front patio faces the Sea of Cortez and the back garden surrounded by hibiscus, oleander, bougainvillea, ficus and lemon trees.
It is very quiet. You can easily go a whole day and not hear anything but desert birds and the sound of the sea. The night sky is incredible – it makes you remember we live on a planet.
The house has electricity and hot water.
Washing machine and “solar-powered dryer” (clothesline).
The house has a caretaker who lives in a small village about a mile away. He will stop by the house at least once a day to make sure you have what you need, answer questions, suggest activities, and so on. He makes sure there’s gas in the propane tanks that supply the stove, and fresh bottled water. (Tap water is fine for bathing, but too salty for drinking or cooking.) If you don’t fish but like to eat fish, he can arrange to bring you fresh fillets every day (most likely red snapper or yellowtail tuna). For an extra charge, daily housekeeping and home-cooked Mexican meals are also available.
