The house overlooks the Guadalhorce valley - Valle del Sol or Valley of Sun - to the mountains of the El Chorro and El Torcal National Parks beyond. It's situated on the hillside behind the church in a quite corner but only 5 minutes walk from the centre. So the best of both worlds - easy access to the wonderful Andalucian countryside but also close to restaurants, shops and life in a lively and very Spanish town.
The house has been completely refurbished since we bought it to create a light and spacious feel with a large (27 ft x 14 ft) open plan living area, three double bedrooms and outside, a large courtyard, three roof terraces and an individually designed pool (hope you like the lion's head fountains!).
The living area is bright and airy - divided by a large woodburning stove into space for relaxing and reading and a slightly more formal dining area. From the living area you walk through to a pretty and well equipped kitchen, with exposed brick pillars, bright blue and white units, Andalusian tiles and ceramic sinks. The bedrooms are tastefully arranged and provide comfortable sleeping for 6 + baby (cot provided), 2 rooms have double beds, 1 has twin singles. A new bathroom and separate shower room have been installed, the house has been redecorated and floors retiled throughout and all the furnishings are new and to a high standard.
What really makes the place is the space outside the house. In this part of Spain for much of the year life is best conducted outdoors and the quality of the space outside of the house is just as important as the accommodation inside. In Cuarenta you first step outside into a delightful, plant filled courtyard, used as the dining area for most of the year (it really is much pleasanter to eat outdoors most of the time).
From the courtyard steps lead up to the first of a series of terraces. To the right at the top of the steps is the first terrace with a large, brick built BBQ and a thoughtfully designed pool (big enough for cooling down and for children to play in but not for swimming) - wonderful for sitting on the back wall, sipping a drink, dangling your feet in the water and looking across at the mountains. Across a passageway to the other side of the roof is a second terrace, covered to provide shade - much appreciated when you get too hot in the high heat of summer. Finally, there are steps up to the highest terrace, the one with the best views across the valley to the mountains and our favourite place to sit in the evening. We have really had good fun working on the courtyard and terraces and we guess that, like us, you will spend most of your waking hours enjoying the space outside rather than in!

Check In n/a Alora Area Information A fascinating place and a great base for exploring the wonderful Andalucian countryside and Old Spain
Įlora is a dramatic small town surrounded by mountains and set astride three steep hills, the most prominent dominated by an old Moorish Castle. For the most part it is still a peueblo blanco (white-walled village) with narrow whitewashed streets, steep slopes, churches, lemon trees and squares where people gather. However, it also has a more modern quarter with reasonable and interesting shops and many bars and restaurants. A very Spanish town but only 30 minutes by road (40km) from Malaga airport, so very convenient for travel from the UK.
The neighbouring countryside is delightful, a fertile valley (valle del sol) dominated by the dramatic mountains of two natural parks, El Chorro and El Torcal. It's perfect for walking, cycling and many other activities or, if you prefer, simply wandering around sightseeing. The region has many areas of outstanding natural beauty, villages and towns to explore and sites of historic interest and importance to visit. We hope you come, you'll love it!
