For the intrepid, the Gorges de l'Allier are almost on the doorstep, with rock-climbing and white-water canoeing on offer. For a more sedate view, there's a tourist train from Langeac which takes the scenic route down the whole length of the Gorges. Other local attractions include the chateau of Chavaniac-Lafayette, ancestral home of the Marquis de Lafayette - probably the only Frenchman to be regarded as a hero by the Americans - and within half an hour's drive you can visit the Museum of the French Resistance, or the village of Lavaudieu (officially one of France's most beautiful). Slightly further afield is Vulcania - a spectacular display of the Auvergne's volcanic origins.
