There is much of historical interest here with links with St. Cuthbert and St. Ninian as well as Robert the Bruce and the Border Reivers. Robert Burns wrote much of his best works here and his home in Dumfries is a well preserved visitor centre.
The particular quality of light brought many well known artists to the region and nearby Kirkcudbright is a mecca for those interested in art and painting. Further afield is Wigtown, Scotland's official Book Town where a treasure trove of books on every subject awaits.
The Colvend Coast area
There is a tremendous range of activities here for the visitor. Golf courses, sailing, horseriding, cycling, walking and fishing are all available close by and there are tennis and swimming pools in nearby Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Dumfries.
Throughout the year there are various festivals including The Wickerman Festival in July, The Spring Fling Art Festival in May, Gael Force from late August to early November and enough musical concerts and festivals to satisfy every taste. For more info visit or or
