The setting is idyllic, very rural with the ancient towns of Martina France & Locorotondo in the distance. It is perfectly peaceful with just the occasional farmer passing by on his tractor to tend his land growing olives, almonds & cherries. Olivia sits in around 1 acre of land & we too have olive, almond, cherry & fig trees. We have our own olive oil made from our olives & the figs & cherries are delicious. Guest are free to help themselves. Alberobello is the main town of the region. It is a town of two halves. On one side you can wander up and down the narrow cobbled streets where there are around 1400 trulli clustered together. It is quite an amazing sight and it is said that Tolkien visited the area and got the idea of his hobbit houses from seeing the trulli. Many of them are now shops and excellent restaurants, all serving delicious food at very inexpensive prices. At the top of the streets is a trulli church with it's huge cone, well worth a step inside. Across the main street, which hosts the very colourful weekly market. is the other side of town with it's many shops, cafes, delis and another huge church. The rocky Adriatic coast is around 20 minutes to the east with small sandy inlets & crystal clear water especially between Barletta and Bari. There are many excellent fish restaurants to visit built right on the rocks with great views of the sea. The old town of Monopoly is worth a trip with its busy harbour, then a wander up into the old town for a coffee in the square. The Ionian coast to the west is a longer trip around 30 kilometres away and has long sandy beaches well worth exploring.
