Other events are the 'Presepe Vivente' (living creche) in December and the Feast of St. George, patron saint of Ortelle, celebrated in late April. Since October 2006, the highlights of Ortelle's territory have been acknowledged as part of the 'Parco Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase', a protected area founded by the Puglia Regional Council in order to preserve the eastern Salento coastal area and its priceless architectural and environmental heritage. Highlights of the area:Not only does this coastal area offer some of the most spectacular landscapes in Italy, it is also home to Castro and Santa Cesarea Terme, two popular and lively holiday resorts with bars, restaurants, boats, pedal boats and canoe rentals, tours to the nearby grottoes and seaside resorts or scuba diving classes to discover the wonders of the ocean depths. Santa Cesarea Terme is renowned for its moorish-eclectic style villas but also for its sulphur grottoes and its renowned thermal baths. Just a few kilometres further are beautiful and popular coves such as Acquaviva and Porto Badisco, where swimming in crystal-clear water is an experience not to be missed. A twenty-minute or so drive leads to the historic town of Otranto, with its legendary castle, its glorious beaches and its old town centre, acknowledged as one of the most beautiful in Italy.
