For years it has been a very popular holiday destination for Italian holidaymakers and yet little known outside of Italy. As a result, British holidaymakers can uniquely experience life in the real Italy as opposed to a contrived tourist trap where everything is priced high for the tourists. The restaurants, bars, cafes and attractions are all owned and run by Scaleans who are passionate about their produce and are dedicated to ensuring you make the right choices when dining and drinking.
Scalea enjoys its own perfect micro climate protected by mountains on three sides. This climate is one of the best in the Mediterranean region with warm temperatures in the summer months and short mild winters. Consequently it doesn't experience the extremes of high temperatures that can make sleeping uncomfortable and are unpleasant to walk around in.
Scalea's beaches are clean and well-serviced. We will recommend you to several lidos where you can occupy sun loungers and use beach umbrellas for shade or you can choose to be independent on the public parts of the beach with just a towel and your sun hat for cover.
A typical day for our apartment guests is to take a leisurely breakfast on their terrace or balcony and then head for the beach. After swimming and sunbathing, you can either enjoy lunch in one of the many beach cafes or bring your own picnic. The Italians like to take a nap after lunch so you'll find the beach empties around 2pm and re-fills at 4pm! People then stay almost until sunset as the temperature remains warm and constant. The daily sunsets are spectacular as the sun becomes a huge orangey-red ball descending into the sea, or so it seems! At all times, the sea is warm and clear and perfect for dipping and swimming.
In the evening, you can either dine on your terrace or walk out to one of the many excellent restaurants and cafes in and around the centre, dining alfresco under a starry sky. If, like us, you love to eat outside in warm air and good surroundings you'll be thoroughly spoilt for choice.
After dinner, the Italians like to go for a "passeggiata" which means "the art of taking a walk in the evening" and is an Italian social ritual in which you can participate taking in the shops, ice-cream bars and activities such as markets and concerts, usually free to all. Scalea is a late town so there's never a rush to get anywhere or do anything for fear of closing. Most shops and some restaurants stay open until midnight.
As you will have the ability to self-cater if you wish, there are many supermarkets within short walking distance all offering excellent and tasty produce at very reasonable prices. On arrival at your apartment, we will give you an information sheet with all the names and addresses you will need.
Wining and Dining.
The Italians love their food and wine. They're famous for it. So in Scalea you will find food and wine as good as it gets anywhere in Italy. And at prices that make the UK look expensive. Typically you can expect to pay 30 Euros (£25) for a two course meal with wine. And that's outside on a terrace with, often, a complimentary glass of liqueur at the end! For wine lovers, the most popular house wine is "frizzante" which means sparkling and a litre carafe of white or rose frizzante will set you back all of 5 Euros Beach
