Situated within the beautiful Po Delta Nature Reserve, the island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, and only residents can enter the island. The island is 5 Km long and 1.5 km wide, and is shaded by around 2 million trees of 150 different species, including the Cluster Pine and the White Poplar (Populus Alba), from which the island derives its name.

Albarella is the natural habitat for fallow deer, pheasants, hares, heron, marsh-harriers, black winged stilts and egrets. Its entire surface area – both land and water – is under close environmental protection.
