The newest Bulgarian winter resort, recently discovered by the foreign tourists, Bansko provides an interesting combination between the virgin nature of Pirin Mountain and the atmosphere of the ancient Bulgarian town.
The town of Bansko is situated in Southwestern Bulgaria (Blagoevgrad province), at the foothills of one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains - Pirin, which is a national preserve, included in the WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE list. Ski-resort of national significance, much visited also in summer as a starting point for excursions in the mountain.
Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rodopi mountains, Bansko is a climatic mountain resort with a short hot summer and long mild winter. The average temperature during January, the coldest month, is - 1.9АC. Snow falls are abundant, providing a constant winter snow cover up to 2 m thick. The skiing season along the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends in mid-April.

The Municipality:
Razlog Municipality is situated in South-western Bulgaria, in the middle of Razlog valley, along the Stream of Mesta River and in the foot of three mountains – Pirin, Rila and the Rhodope Mountains. The average altitude is 900 meters. The territory of the municipality is 439.86 square meters. Razlog Municipality is neighbouring to several other municipalities - Bansko, Kresna, Belitsa, Simitli, Samokov and Blagoevgrad. The administrative centre of the municipality is connected with the towns of Velingrad, Septemvri and Gotze Delchev through the E-86 international road, as well as with the projected international highway between Sofia and Drama (Greece). There is a narrow-gauge railway line crossing the municipality, connecting the village of Dobrinishte with the town of Septemvri. A very important factor defining the local economic development is the closeness of administrative centres like the capital Sofia, the cities of Blagoevgrad, Pazardjik and Plovdiv.
The Municipality of Razlog comprises of its administrative center – the town of Razlog, and seven other villages – Banya, Bachevo, Dobarsko, Godlevo, Gorno Draglishte, Dolno Draglishte, and Eleshnitsa
The District:
Blagoevgrad Region is situated in the southwestern part of Bulgaria and covers the region of Pirin; it is bounded by Kyustendil, Sofia, Pazardzhik and Smolyan regions and it reaches out to the state border with Greece in the south and to the Republic of Macedonia in the west. Its location favors the development of friendly trans-border relations.
The relief is predominantly mountainous, the highest parts being alpine. The exceptions are the river valleys of the Struma and Mesta and their tributaries where the majority of the population resides. The region covers the area of the mountains of Pirin, Ograzhden, Vlahina and Maleshevska, Belasitza, Slavyanska, parts of the Rhodopes and the Rila Mountains. The beautiful and wild nature of the region kept untouched in the national parks and reserves is considered to be one of the greatest treasures of the region. The Pirin National Park is of worldwide importance and is on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.
An international highway and the Belgrad-Sofia-Athens railroad pass through the region. The numerous mineral springs (40 % of all mineral springs in Bulgaria), the beautiful nature and the rich cultural heritage determine the successful development of winter sports and resorts as well as ecotourism, balneological and cultural tourism.
The region has had eventful history, traces of which can be found in the archeological, architectural and ethnological heritage. There are remains from Thracian mounds and antique settlements. The mountainous roads had been once guarded by majestic medieval fortresses. |
