Melissa is situated in the province of Crotone on a rocky rib at 256metres above sea level and has 4705 inhabitants over an area of 5000 hectare. The first document that makes a reference to Melissa dates back to 1200 but its history really started long before that as is attested by some archeological finds of old paving that date back to Roman times. The commune of Melissa stretches around the hill to the sea where we find Torre Melissa, small, but a very significant tourist centre that owes its fame to its tower which is one of the many towers that were built along the stretch of the Lonian coast to defend it against invasions.
