Bernalda is 14km from the seaside resort of Metaponto which boasts sandy beaches on the Ionian coast. Metaponto is also famous as an important centre of "Magna Grecia", and full of fascinating archaeological sites and the ruins of Ancient Greek temples. The surrounding countryside is spectacular and unspoilt with olive groves and orange and lemon trees. Bernalda is famous as the ancestral home of the legendary film director Francis Ford Coppola.
