The island, which is 193 km2 in area, is now a hugely popular tourist destination that is noted for its scenic beauty, unspoilt beaches, luxuriant tropical vegetation and rugged landscape. Most of its territory is within the Ilha Grande State Park. The remainder of the island is subject to stringent development restrictions. Ilha Grande is one of the most pristine remnants of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest making it one of the richest ecosystems in the world. As a hotspot for biodiversity and conservation, it holds some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered species, including the red-ruffed fruit crow, the brown howler monkey, the maned sloth, the red-browed Amazon parrot, and the broad-snouted caiman. The seas around the island, which are also protected, feature a unique convergence of tropical, subtropical, and temperate-zone marine life, and may be the only waters in the world where it is possible to see corals and tropical fish along with Magellanic penguins and Southern Right whales.
The Island is famous for its nature reserves and beaches and its strong environmental mindset: there are no large hotels, no buildings with more than 2 stories. Small-scale ecotourism is being encouraged on the island. Although it has no sealed roads and motorised vehicles are banned, the island has more than 150 km (93 miles) of hiking trails connecting all the coastal villages and hamlets. Lodgings have been made available near many of the Island's 100 unspoilt beaches. One of the most popular activities for visitors is to trek to spectacular Lopes Mendes surf beach, about a two hour hike from Abraćo. Travel companies are now offering sight-seeing trips to see the Island's various beaches, mountains trails and waterfalls. Other popular activities are, trekking, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and much more. Most of the visitor facilities and the park headquarters are located in the Vila do Abraćo. The village can be reached from the mainland by local ferries and fast zodiac speedboats.
Aratinga enjoys a privileged position in Abraćo. Near to everything, we are just 5 minutes on foot from the centre of the village and only 4 minutes to Abraćo beach. In spite of our proximity, Aratinga inn offers guests total privacy and a cool, verdant sanctuary from the bustle of the streets.
From the lush greenery of our tropical garden we have a magnificent view of the mysterious Pico de Ferreira, the third highest peak on the Island.
Aratinga has been built with certified Brazilian plantation hardwood timbers, rendered cement, and glass, all in excellent taste, with an eclectic mix of classic Portuguese colonial style guest rooms and charming Balinese style chalets.
The owners house is built on two levels with a spacious upstairs bedroom with sea views and modern en suite bathroom. Downstairs there is a large living room, with separate TV and dining areas, a kitchen, laundry, storage and cleaning areas, washroom and a private courtyard garden.
