The Lighthouse is built of brick and rendered in lime mortar. The roof was updated by Trinity House (believed to be 1970's) and is specifically designed with anchor points and handrails to facilitate maintenance by industrial abseilers. To paint or maintain the tower specialist rope access technicians (IRATA) can be engaged but the tower has only just been given a fresh coat of paint and should be good for many years. Nowadays rope access is widely used to maintain high buildings as it is much more cost effective than scaffolding and there are any specialist firms to choose from based in the south west.
For the more daring buyer it is possible for any able-bodied person to train and take an IRATA course and the current owner has completed this training allowing him to maintain the tower himself!
The layout of the tower has been designed to comply with the strictest Fire Regulations and the lighthouse even has it's own industrial (copper & brass) sprinkler system and pump room installed which are fairly maintenance free and only require one annual check.
