La Canonica Vecchia (The Old Rectory of Selva )

History
Driving on Via Giardini on the way to Pavullo, 4 kms from the town center, if you
make a right along a flat road you arrive at Selva. In the XII Century documents, Selva is called Silva de Ula or de Virola.

The area was completely covered with woods and, in 1131, it was donated by the
Bishop of Modena Dodone to the friars of the S. Pietro di Modena monastery in order for them to build a monastery.

The friars built a church, of which no trace remained as it was demolished in the XIX Century, and a building called, even today, Canonica Vecchia.

Location
La Canonica Vecchia is located in Selva di Serramazzoni, on the Northern Apennines . The place can be easily reached via perfectly paved state highways and local roads. The property is situated 700 a.s.l., thus offering a pleasantly crisp weather in the summer.

Property
The property is made of two buildings situated on a plot of land of approximately 9,000 m2 of meadows and woods. From three sides of the property one can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the Apennine hills and the Cimone Mount, without buildings, roads, and such. A brook limits the eastern side of the woods. The area, even if very close to the center of Selva, is extremely quiet. The property bounds outside the woods are completely penned.

House
The main building, still nearly unchanged, is represented by the vecchia canonica (old rectory). It is a two-store building, completely made of local stones, that develops on a surface of 165 m2, of which 110 m2 are habitations and 55 m2 are cellars and utility rooms.

The house was completely refurbished in 2003 strictly respecting the original architectural principles.

In particular, the following criteria were applied:

No modification was made to the walls with respect to the original plant;
The original inside doors, ceiling beams and terracotta tiles have been carefully restored

Refurbishing of the raw plasterwork and tempera whitewashing application in the typical shades of the original period

The furniture, furnishings and decorative objects are mainly of the late 1800s/early 1900s local manufacture

The house fixtures (heating, water, sanitary and electrical system) have been completely remade in accordance with current applicable law.

All the buildings are protected with a perimetric and volumetric alarm system

Stable and the Barn
The accessory building is what is left of the church, which was originally built in the XII Century and transformed into stable/barn in the early 1900s .

The building has a floor area of approximately 260 m2 and is made of the former stable on the ground floor and the former barn on the upper floor .

This building has been only partially refurbished, thus restoring the original structure and look .

It is currently being used for tool storage (former stable area) and as a patio (former barn area).

In the former stable area are three water tanks of 1,000 liters each, fed with the water of a local spring and used for hosing by means of a motor pump .

To the rear of the building is a wide area used for parking .
