It is best known for its proximity to the archaeological site of Nezakcij, the capital of the Illyrian people of Histria. Nearby is Šandalja, a system of several caves, named after the quarry of the same name. Stone was exploited at this site as early as Roman times. Šandalja is today located in the area of the OKZ "Valtura" (Open Penitentiary Institution Valtura). In terms of the wealth of paleontological, paleolithic and paleoanthropological finds, which were found in 9-meter-thick layers, the site occupies a leading position on European soil. To date, the Šandalja I and II caves, located ten meters apart, have been explored. The remains of Homo erectus incisors, which are one million years old, were found there. These data speak of the oldest prehistoric man in Europe. Likewise, the oldest percussion tool in Europe (a flint striker) was found at this site. There are several quarries in the Valtura area. The limestone of the same name extracted here is used for cladding interior and exterior surfaces. The village is home to the neo-Gothic Church of St. John (from 1899), whose unique 28-meter bell tower is built in the shape of an octagon.
