Paraty (also written Parati) is situated on the south coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, being 258 kilometers from the state capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro.
It is located to the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, covering an area of 937 Km2, and sharing borders with the municipality of Angra dos Reis and the state of São Paulo. Until the XVII century, its only habitants were the Guaianás natives, as the city is geogra- phically located between ocean and mountains.
The colonial city of Paraty and Ilha Grande were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2019, for their unique blend of historical and natural riches. It is the first mixed place (cultural and natural heritage) in Brazil.
