Piazza Armerina. My first day in the new house
Piazza Armerina, the villa and the hills
The car stops in front of a large gate. Mom smiles, pats her belly and says, “We're here.” I jump down, curious. Dad opens the gate and we stand in front of a large house, surrounded by greenery. All around, just silence, wind in the trees, and a garden that never seems to end. Dad says it's over 13,000 meters of land all of ours, I don't know how many there are, but I see so many! I run toward the house. The entrance is wide and smells of orange. On the ground floor is a bright living area with large windows. The kitchen is huge - I can already imagine grandma making arancini - and there is a room with a sitting area and a stove of those beautiful ones, which also warms the heart. At the back, a modern bathroom and a laundry room, all comfortable and neat. There's even a door that leads straight to the garage: no more shopping bags in the rain and I'll finally have a workshop where I can fix my little cars. I run up the stairs. On the ...
Strolling through the center of Piazza Armerina, I meet up with Luigi, my guide for the day. He has the air of a slightly melancholic actor, and his name seems to tie him—unknowingly—to one of the most famous fathers of Italian literature, who was born on this marvelous Mediterranean island. With a sly smile, he takes me to see the first property on my list: a fully renovated apartment, a modern and refined interpretation of a historic residence. Luigi points out how the renovation was designed to gracefully welcome those seeking an atmosphere of class, while keeping intact the connection to local tradition and the soul of the place. The apartment, he tells me, has a long history of hospita...
Piazza Armerina, the perfect investment
Piazza Armerina, modern duplex in the medieval village
Today we are going to Piazza Armerina, a municipality in central-eastern Sicily located in the Erei mountains at around 700 m above sea level. I must admit that I was unaware of the presence of this place and I thought it was a square in Enna and not a true natural and artistic masterpiece, known as "The city of Mosaics and the Norman Palio" or "The city of 100 churches". Our meeting is at the Duomo, the highest point in the city. From here a series of medieval streets unfold through which we wander in ecstasy, while to the right and left we are surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque buildings. A Vespa whizzing by a few steps away from us brings us back down to earth and understand that we are in the 21st century. Among these ancient buildings we identify the one where the property we are going to visit today is located, the result of a recent renovation where a large and modern apartment has been created on the first and second floors. ...
